Het initiatief ‘Castles ‘n Ruins’ heeft tot doel bij te dragen aan de ‘ontgrendeling’ van kasteelruines en de ‘recontouring’ van verdwenen kastelen.
Vanuit de passie voor heel Europa en vanuit de praktijk in de gebieden van het voormalig Hertogdom Gelre.
Het gaat om het op ‘passende’ wijze ter plekke meer beleefbaar maken van de middeleeuwse geschiedenis van kastelen. Zoals bij de huidige intacte kastelen de kasteelbeleving en exploitatie op een passende en voorzichtige wijze moet gebeuren, zo wil dit initiatief bijdragen aan terughoudende restauraties en openstelling van ruïnes (ontgrendeling) en de voorzichtige ontgravingen en communicatief herstellen van ondergrondse restanten door middel van contouring in 2d of 3d (recontouring).
Het gaat er daarnaast om de vastgelegde kennis welke zich nu in documenten bevindt, ter plekke te kunnen presenteren.
“In Nederland bevat de lijst van rijksbeschermde monumenten ongeveer honderd kasteelruïnes en tweehonderd archeologische kasteelterreinen – de laatste vaak met onzichtbare, ondergrondse kasteelresten. Verder telt ons land zo’n zevenhonderd archeologische kasteelterreinen die niet als rijksmonument beschermd zijn. En dan worden er nog af en toe verdwenen kastelen ontdekt, waarvan het bestaan niet bekend was of waarvan we uit geschreven bronnen hooguit een vermoeden hadden. “
Het kleine aantal ruïnes in Nederland loopt het gevaar bij al te omvattende ontsluiting of eerder, herbestemming, juist hun kwaliteit als ruïne te verliezen. Hier is steeds een voorzichtige benadering vereist. Het is van belang tot een ongestoorde beleving te kunnen komen van de ruïne.
Aangaande de grote hoeveelheid verborgen kasteelterreinen met weinig tot geen bovengrondse resten, is er nog een wereld aan ontdekkingen te winnen.

The "Castles' n Ruins" initiative aims to contribute to the "unreveiling" of castle ruins and the "recontouring" of lost castles.
From the passion for the whole of Europe and from practice in the areas of the former Duchy of Gelre.
It is about making the medieval history of castles more perceptible on the spot in an 'appropriate' way. Just as the castle experience and exploitation must be done in an appropriate and careful manner with the current intact castles, this initiative wants to contribute to conservative restoration and opening of ruins (unreveiling) and the careful excavation and communicative restoration of underground remains by means of contouring in 2D or 3d (recontouring).
It is also about being able to present the recorded knowledge that is now contained in documents on the spot.
“In the Netherlands, the list of state-protected monuments contains about a hundred castle ruins and two hundred archaeological castle grounds - the latter often with invisible, underground castle remains. Furthermore, our country has about 700 archaeological castle grounds that are not protected as a national monument. And now and then disappeared castles are discovered, the existence of which was unknown or of which we had at most a suspicion from written sources.
The small number of ruins in the Netherlands runs the risk of losing their quality as a ruin if they are opened up all the way through or, rather, converted into a new use. A cautious approach is always required here. It is important to be able to achieve an undisturbed experience of the ruin.
Considering the large amount of castle grounds with little to no aboveground remains, there is still a world of ‘unveiling’ and ‘recontouring’ to be gained.
